Evolution of spatial patterns of brain activity over development: a role in the functional specialization of brain networks

Résumé

The development of functionally specialized brain networks allows the emergence and improvement of cognitive abilities. This specialization partly emerges from the interactions between brain regions through changes in the temporal correlations of their brain activity. Nevertheless, it is now well assumed that the functioning of brain networks also depends on the spatial organization of their brain activity. However, how this spatial organization is formed during development remains unknown as to whether it contributes to the functional specialization of brain networks. This study attempts to answer these questions by examining agerelated changes in the spatial correlations of brain activity within the theory of mind network. The results show, for the first time, an age-related increase in the spatial correlations of brain activity within this network, reflecting an increase in the similarity of spatial patterns across the network. Furthermore, this increase was associated with improved children's performance in a theory of mind task. We propose that the increasing similarity of spatial patterns during development has important implications for understanding the functional specialization of brain networks.
